REMS (Radiofrequency Echographic Multi Spectrometry) is an FDA-cleared, radiation-free ultrasound technology that measures both bone mineral density and bone quality. Unlike DEXA scans, REMS uses no ionizing radiation and can be performed in approximately 20 minutes with same-day results.
DEXA scans use X-ray radiation and measure only bone mineral density (BMD). REMS uses ultrasound, involves zero radiation exposure, and measures both BMD and bone quality — providing a more complete picture of bone health. REMS also calculates a Fragility Score and 5-year fracture risk that DEXA does not offer.
No referral is required. You can book your REMS bone health assessment directly through our website. However, we recommend sharing your results with your primary care provider or specialist for integrated care.
REMS assessments are not typically covered by traditional health insurance. However, you can use HSA (Health Savings Account) or FSA (Flexible Spending Account) funds to pay for your assessment. We accept all major credit and debit cards.
The REMS bone health assessment itself takes approximately 20 minutes. Plan for about 30 minutes total to allow time for check-in and a brief overview of your results before you leave.
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. The scan is performed on the lumbar spine and femoral neck areas. You do not need to undress — the ultrasound works through light clothing.
